The Subclass 485 Visa and the Path to Australian Permanent Residence: How Long Do You Have, and Which Route?

A Subclass 485 visa does not, in itself, grant permanent residence; it is a lawful window of full-time work: 18 months in the Post-Vocational Education Work stream (diploma/trade qualifications) and two to three years in the Post-Higher Education Work stream. Permanent residence is achieved through a separate pathway: the points-tested 189/190, a 482 leading to 186 TRT (generally two years of employment with a sponsor), a 491 leading to 191 (three years), or an 820 leading to 801 (generally two years).

Dr Sirous Ahmadi, an Australian migration lawyer with MARA registration number 0854826, considers this one of the most frequent questions asked by international graduates, and he frames the reality precisely: the 485 is an opportunity, not an entitlement. Its true value lies in giving you a period of lawful stay with full work rights, so that within that window you can meet the requirements of one of the genuine permanent residence pathways.

The structure of the streams has been clear since 1 July 2024: the 18-month option belongs to the Post-Vocational Education Work stream and is for holders of diploma and vocational qualifications whose occupation appears on the relevant skilled list and who have obtained a skills assessment. Holders of higher education qualifications use the Post-Higher Education Work stream: up to two years for a bachelor degree (including honours), a masters by coursework or an extended masters, and up to three years for a masters by research or a doctorate. Graduates who have studied and lived in designated regional areas may take advantage of the Second Post-Higher Education Work stream for a further one to two years of stay.

Two important exceptions should not be overlooked. Holders of Hong Kong and British National (Overseas) passports receive a five-year Subclass 485 visa and also have a dedicated, direct route to permanent residence: the Hong Kong stream of Subclass 191 (regional) after three years of continuous residence, and the Hong Kong stream of Subclass 189 after four years of continuous residence while holding a Subclass 457, 482 or 485 visa. There are also concessions for Indian nationals under the AI-ECTA: up to three years for bachelor graduates with First Class Honours in STEM/ICT fields and for masters graduates, and up to four years for doctoral graduates.

The entry requirements for the 485 must also be assessed from the outset: you must be aged 35 or under at the time of application — with exceptions for masters by research and doctoral graduates, as well as Hong Kong/BN(O) passport holders, who may be under 50; the application must be lodged within six months of completing your course; and you must provide English language results from a single test sitting taken in the past 12 months. The Replacement stream has also been closed.

In practice, sound planning means knowing from day one of your 485 which visa is your ultimate destination, because points thresholds, occupation lists and state nomination policies all change, and there is no guarantee behind the formula of “two years of work, then permanent residence”. The 485 buys you time; it is strategy that converts that time into permanent residence.
